What a night! In front of 4,800 enthusiastic darts fans in the sold-out Fraport Arena Mensur Suljovic won the first edition of the GUDE DARTS OPEN Frankfurt on Holy Saturday. In a thrilling final he defeated Simon Whitlock 5:2. Whitlock defeated in the first semi-final 4:0 five times World Champion and birthday boy Raymond van Barneveld. The second semi-final between Phil Taylor and Mensur Suljovic was won 4:1 by the Austrian Suljovic. But the crowd was not only entertained in the final rounds. Already the group matches were all highly thrilling!
Group A was won by 16 times World Champion Phil Taylor with 2:1 wins. He had to admit defeat in the third match local hero Sascha Stein with 3:1. Nevertheless it was enough to win the group ahead of Simon Whitlock who was level on points. Third in the group was Michi Unterbuchner, who won the German duel against Sascha Stein.
In Group B wildcard winner Oliver Müller, who won 3:2 against Florian Müller in the heads up, won one leg each against Nico Kurz and Raymond van Barneveld. But it was not enough to win. Unbeaten remained Raymond van Barneveld who won all three group matches. Mensur Suljovic defeated in the last group match Nico Kurz with 3:0 and progressed as second in the group into the semi-finals.
The most emotional moment was the birthday serenade of the 4.800 fans for Raymond van Barneveld. The Dutchman celebrated his 52nd birthday on Saturday and was suitably presented with a cake decorated as a dartboard by the organisers.
