How did it once live in the old town of Frankfurt. From the outside, the houses of the "new old town" are beautifully reconstructed. Inside, however, the present has moved in. At least in nearly all houses. In the Haus zur Goldenen Waage, one of the most beautiful half-timbered buildings from the Renaissance, interested visitors can now immerse themselves in the past and see how the wealthy merchant family van Hamel might have lived there in the 17th century.
For the two upper floors of the front building are now museum rooms of the Historical Museum. They have been furnished with 17th- and 18th-century furniture, paintings, and everyday objects, just as the merchant family that built the house in 1618 might have owned. From now on, these museum rooms can be visited on guided tours. The highlight of each tour is the "Belvederchen" with its view of the cathedral and the surrounding roofs. Public tours will take place daily - except on Mondays - at 4 p.m. and will start in the foyer of the Historical Museum in the Saalhof.
"The establishment of museum rooms not only completes the reconstruction of the Golden Scales, but also marks a brilliant capstone for the entire Cathedral-Roman project. This major and extraordinary urban repair in the historic centre of Frankfurt is thus coming to a conclusion after 14 years of discussion, planning and realisation," emphasises Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann.
As early as 1899, the city had acquired the important 17th-century monument and handed it over to the Historical Museum in 1913. On March 22, 1944, the Goldene Waage - like most of Frankfurt's old town - was destroyed by bombing during World War II. The house disappeared from the cityscape - until its detailed reconstruction in the course of the Dom-Römer project (2014-2018).
