Every summer it is once again one of the highlights in Frankfurt's cultural calendar: the big Europa Open Air at the Weseler Werft. Year after year, thousands of people enjoy classical music on the banks of the Main at sunset with a view of the skyline. This is always incredibly beautiful and creates a very special atmosphere, which we unfortunately had to do without last year. Now the news came today: there will be no Europa Open Air by the hr Symphony Orchestra and the European Central Bank in the summer of 2021 either. "The decision, which we took together with the ECB, was not easy for us," says hr Director Manfred Krupp, "but in view of the still uncertain pandemic situation, we cannot in good conscience organise a concert of this magnitude with several thousand visitors. The Europa Open Air in particular thrives on the great, relaxed atmosphere with picnic blankets and catering. But it is precisely this special experience on the banks of the Main that we would not be able to offer our audience at the moment. However, we very much hope that we will all meet again at the Weseler Werft in 2022."
Europe Open Air President Christine Lagarde concurs: "We look forward with great anticipation to the continuation of our successful cooperation with Hessischer Rundfunk next year. Then, hopefully, the Frankfurt audience will again be able to enjoy this wonderful event to the full". The European Central Bank has also postponed its planned European Culture Days with Poland as the guest country until 2022. The Europa Open Air will kick off each year.
The decision to cancel again is painful, but understandable. We, too, look forward to the Europa Open Air 2022 then, and this summer enjoy the many other great cultural events on offer in our beautiful city in the coming months.
