Orange Day - Wednesday is International Day against Violence against Women and Girls

In 2019, 1,595 cases of domestic violence were reported to the Frankfurt police alone. This figure shows: domestic violence is unfortunately still the order of the day. According to expert estimates, every fourth woman experiences physical and/or sexual violence by a current or former relationship partner at least once in her life. Sexual harassment, such as so-called "cat calls", is part of everyday life for many women and girls.

Annually, on November 25, 2020, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, many institutions participate in the global campaign "Orange your City". In Frankfurt am Main this year, numerous representative buildings will be illuminated in the color orange, which is based on the campaign color of the UN Women organization of the United Nations. The Frankfurt police have also been involved in various campaigns for years, such as the help hotline. This year, however, the police want to set a very special example:

So for the first time, the foyer at police headquarters will shine in orange light on November 25. Thus, an unmistakable sign against violence against women and girls shall be set.

Also the Municipal Representation of Foreigners (KAV) points out the importance of the International Day against Violence against Women and Girls: It should remind everyone to perceive assaults, to take active action against them and to always clearly show the flag. Silence and turning a blind eye meant more violence and more suffering in the future, because these crimes were everyone's business.

The KAV calls on people to consciously mark the day and thus draw attention to it. There are numerous actions in Frankfurt am Main despite the Corona pandemic, for example a human chain at 16:30. The KAV recommends to participate in these or other actions in compliance with all hygiene regulations and peacefully.

Find help

The help hotline "Gewalt gegen Frauen" offers victims the opportunity to get anonymous, competent, safe and barrier-free advice at any time. Qualified counsellors confidentially assist those seeking help and, if necessary, refer them to local support services, such as a women's counselling centre or a women's shelter in the vicinity. Accessibility and multilingualism ensure access for women with disabilities or little knowledge of German. The help hotline is also available to relatives, friends and professionals for questions and information.

The help hotline at 08000 116 016 is available 365 days a year, around the clock, free of charge. Advice can be given in 17 languages.
