(ffm) More visibility for bicycle traffic on Taunusanlage and Bockenheimer Anlage: on the good 500-meter section between Reuterweg and Mainzer Landstraße, the existing bicycle lanes now glow in striking red. "This central inner city area is a hotspot for cycling. This makes it all the more important for all road users to keep an overview. The markings help to visibly structure the flow of traffic," says Klaus Oesterling, head of the traffic department.
Coming from Reuterweg or the inner Cityring, cars wanting to turn right past the Alte Oper into Bockenheimer Landstraße have to cross a bike lane - a situation that cyclists often find uncomfortable. Here, the red signal colour can help to sharpen the attention of those involved. There is a similar bike ford in the opposite direction, where vehicles coming from Mainzer Landstraße cross when they want to turn right onto Junghofstraße.
Cleaner now is the spot between Opernplatz and Bockenheimer Landstraße - a "T" intersection in three directions for motor vehicle traffic, and an important central intersection in all four directions for bike traffic. In addition, there are many pedestrians. The red-colored bike lanes help to make the different traffic flows more visible to increase the sense of safety in everyday street life.
The Road Traffic Office drew up the conceptual planning for marking work, the Office of Road Construction and Development (ASE) is taking care of the execution. The company contracted by the ASE first refreshed the existing white marking before the red paint was applied by hand to the cycle lanes over an area of around 2000 square metres. The coating is such that the surface has a slight irregularity. As with previous red markings in the Frankfurt urban area, this in turn ensures good grip. The measure cost around 75,000 euros. The work will be fully completed as soon as the still missing directional arrows and bicycle pictograms are applied in the coming days.
The measure is part of the agreement with the "Radentscheid Frankfurt", which resulted in the resolution "Fahrradstadt Frankfurt" of the city parliament on 29 August 2019. In recent weeks, the city of Frankfurt had marked additional cycling facilities at three busy intersections in red.
