Frankfurt to become greener

Frankfurt to become greener

City gives money for more green on roof, on facade and in the backyard

During the hot summer of last year, we noticed it: climate change will make itself very unpleasantly felt even in a big city like Frankfurt. So of course we are looking for ways and means to counteract it a little. Green spaces can help. But where are they to be created in a city that is becoming more and more densely built up? Well, of course: on and around the houses. And that is exactly what is to be promoted. That's why it has never been so inexpensive to green your roof, your backyard or the facade of your house. Anyone who wants to do this will be reimbursed 50 percent of the costs by the city of Frankfurt. The green miracle is made possible by the "Frankfurt freshens up" funding programme. Applications are still being accepted for this year's planting season.

So when, if not now? Currently, greenery and blossoms are everywhere. The planting season has begun. "That's why we would like to motivate all Frankfurt residents once again to make a contribution to refreshing the city," said Head of the Environment Rosemarie Heilig at the presentation of the "Frankfurt frischt auf" poster campaign. Across the city, 500 posters in trams, on advertising pillars and underground stations will immediately draw attention to the funding programme.

A total of ten million euros is available in the five-year programme. The background to the "climate bonus" is the increasing warming. "Not least the dry and hot summer of 2018 has shown how necessary measures against the overheating of the city are," said Heilig. Green roofs and facades as well as courtyard unsealing with greenery have been proven to help cool the living environment.

In addition, drinking fountains and shading - such as awnings - in publicly accessible places are also funded. The maximum funding per project is 50,000 euros.

And that's not all: the program also includes a free consultation. So in addition to the professionals, lay people can also provide for a more beautiful and pleasant living environment.

The funding program "Frankfurt frischt auf" of the city has been running since 2018, so far more than 160 people have been advised. More than 30 projects are already being implemented. In the selection of projects, the Climate Plan Atlas of 2016 serves as a basis, in which, among other things, particularly overheated urban neighborhoods with a low proportion of vegetation were identified.
