After two years of construction, the time has come: the outdoor enclosure for the Asiatic lions is finished! The area occupied by the majestic residents Kumar and Zarina has more than doubled in size and the visitor area has also been completely redesigned. Visitors can expect an immersive nature experience.
The new three-tiered enclosure relief provides different views for visitors and at the same time ensures a varied terrain structure for the lions. An additional outdoor enclosure offers space for temporarily separated animals and supports the future breeding of the endangered Asiatic lions.
A special attraction is the new training fence, which allows visitors to watch the lions undergo medical training and learn more about the animals and their care.
The total cost of the project is around 2.2 million euros, with over 300,000 euros being financed by donations and third-party funding. The conversion of the facility, which dates back to the 1950s, represents an important step in the zoo's development and fits seamlessly into the zoo's immersive design principle.
Dr. Ina Hartwig (Head of Department for Culture and Science), Zoo Director Dr. Christina Geiger and Sigrid Eichler (Head of the Office for Construction and Real Estate) officially opened the new enclosure today and opened the gate for the lions.
