The zoo is getting a new restaurant that combines sustainability and the experience of nature. On September 13, the city council approved the construction of the two-storey building, which will be located centrally in the zoo next to the playground. A novelty: the restaurant will also be accessible to external guests outside of opening hours, as it will have direct access to the public road.
The restaurant concept focuses on regional and sustainable food as well as environmentally friendly production processes. The avoidance of disposable tableware and packaging waste as well as short transportation routes are intended to protect the environment. Social standards are also taken into account for everyone involved along the supply chain.
Zoo Director Dr. Christina Geiger emphasizes the sustainable construction of the building, whose roof will be greened and equipped with photovoltaics. "The restaurant is intended to round off the zoo experience and offer numerous references to the animal area," says Geiger.
The construction costs amount to around ten million euros and the construction time is estimated at around two and a half years.
