What will become of the traditional restaurant "Zur Sonne"?

27.04.2018 | 08:32 Clock | Citywhispers
What will become of the traditional restaurant 'Zur Sonne'?

How passionate we Frankfurters can be when it comes to tradition and our landmarks, that was probably particularly well illustrated after the fire of the Goethe Tower. Now, for a few weeks now, there has been another place that is very close to the hearts of many Frankfurters and which is in danger of disappearing in the near future. The talk is of the inn "Zur Sonne" in Berger Straße 312. For over 240 years, a very traditional inn has existed in the 1768 house, which is simply part of Frankfurt not only for "Bernemer", but for residents of all parts of the city.

Now the owner family Lorz is offering the house, which has belonged to them for about 30 years, for sale. The property is said to cost a proud 2.5 million euros. What startles residents like Thomas Becker is the indication of the real estate company Zipf, which is in charge of the sale, that a conversion of the gastronomic area into living space would be quite conceivable. This would mean the definitive disappearance of Bornheim's oldest and largest cider pub and thus an important cultural asset of the city. To prevent this, Becker has started an online petition(<link http: www.openpetition.de _blank>Www.openpetition.de/!sonne), which has found around 3,800 supporters to date. After a total of 90 days, the signatures will then be presented to Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann, who has already announced his support.

According to Becker, there are even initial ideas to finance the object via crowdfunding possibly via the GLS Bank or an own initiative. In addition, associations have come forward to express their interest. These want to receive the object in the today's form (with catering trade) and association-appropriate use.

Neben Thomas Becker gives it still further Frankfurt, which use themselves actively for the receipt of the popular cider restaurant. For example, the association Inter Esse, which is currently <link https: www.facebook.com interesseffm _blank>being founded, a transcultural collective of music, art and culture creators. With actions such as a recent jam session in Günthersburgpark, they want to draw attention to the impending end of the cider bar and raise money for their big goal: "Zur Sonne" is to become an alternative cultural center, where the traditional gastronomy business is maintained.

The commitment of citizens like Thomas Becker or the founders of Inter Esse, however, is opposed by the really enormous hurdle of 2.5 million euros. However, it is nice to see that this hurdle does not affect the commitment, the ideas and the dialogue. Because in the end, everyone agrees: The popular cider restaurant "Zur Sonne" must remain with us. It would be a shame if this traditional piece of Frankfurt were to disappear forever like so many others before it
