On Saturday, 23 November, the outstanding achievements of Frankfurt athletes were honored in front of around 400 guests at the 12th Frankfurt Sports Gala in the Mainarcaden. The event honored award winners in nine categories, including "Sportswoman of the Year", "Sportsman of the Year" and "Team of the Year", which were determined by a public vote. Other categories such as junior sport and para sport were decided by a jury of experts.
In his speech, Mayor Mike Josef highlighted the successes of the athletes in national and international competitions and emphasized the importance of sport for Frankfurt's reputation. A special highlight was the entry of the medal winners of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the city's Golden Book.
Award winners 2024:
- Sportswoman of the Year: Lisa Mayer (sprint), bronze medal 4x100m at the Olympics
- Athlete of the Year: Oliver Zeidler (rowing), Olympic champion, European champion
- Team of the Year: GTSV Frankfurt 1908 (deaf basketball), German champion
- Up-and-coming female athlete: Curly Brown (discus throw), German U20 and U23 champion
- Young athlete: Joris Backhaus (volleyball), German U18 beach volleyball champion
- Para athlete: Juliane Wolf (table tennis), Paralympics silver in doubles
- Para athlete: Nico Dreimüller (wheelchair basketball), Paralympics bronze
- Coach of the year: David Corell (sprint), national short sprint coach
- Coach of the Year: Christine Bernstein (karate), responsible for the Kata-T squad
The event, hosted by Julia Nestle, offered a varied program with an LED show and musical accompaniment by the band Waterproof. The subsequent after-show party rounded off the evening in style.
