At Hauptwache and Konstablerwache as well as on the Römerberg, all citizens and guests of Frankfurt can now surf for free
The currently operational public WiFi access points in Frankfurt have been active since April 29. There are six points at the Hauptwache, four points at the Konstablerwache and two points on the Römerberg. Another access point at Paulsplatz is to follow.
City Councillor Eileen O'Sullivan, Head of Citizens, Digital and International Affairs, says: "With public Wi-Fi, Frankfurt is joining the ranks of European role models such as Barcelona, Paris and Munich. We have paid particular attention to making access to Wi-Fi as low-threshold as possible. As a first step, we are creating good coverage of important Frankfurt hotspots. We will build on this in the coming months and years."
The public WiFi will be broadcast under the SSID "FrankfurtFreeWifi". Users do not have to register, but only accept the terms of use. Both the assigned IP address and the MAC address of the end device are only stored for the duration of participation in the WLAN. As neither a login name nor an email address is required, it is virtually impossible to identify a person afterwards.
Currently, surfing via the http and https protocols is enabled. Certain services, such as streaming, are blocked for capacity reasons, as is usual in public Wi-Fi networks.
