The tourism industry in Frankfurt am Main once again recorded positive developments in August 2024. With a total of 502,528 guests and 881,289 overnight stays, the figures rose by 4.4% in terms of guests and 5.6% in terms of overnight stays compared to the same month last year. One notable aspect of this increase is that no major trade fairs or congresses took place, so the growth is mainly attributed to individual tourism.
Successful year for Frankfurt tourism
From January to August 2024, a total of 7.25 million overnight stays were recorded in Frankfurt, an increase of 9.2 percent compared to the previous year. Guest numbers rose by 9.5 percent to around 4.15 million in the same period. The proportion of foreign visitors was particularly strong: 1.51 million international guests accounted for 2.91 million overnight stays, an increase of 12.2 percent. This means that foreign guests accounted for 36.3 percent of total demand, while domestic tourists made up 63.7 percent.
Popular markets: USA, China and Great Britain
The USA remains the most important foreign source market with 486,157 overnight stays, an increase of 15.3 percent compared to 2023. Particularly striking was the strong growth in guests from China, which recorded an increase of 56.3% with 164,857 overnight stays. Although the figures are still slightly below pre-pandemic levels, China now ranks third among the most important international markets behind the UK, which recorded an increase of 33.4 percent with 219,846 overnight stays.
Other Asian countries such as India (+26.8 percent) and Japan (+13.7 percent) also contributed to the increase in overnight stays. In Europe, the Netherlands (+7.4 percent) and Italy (+5.3 percent) also showed positive developments.
More beds and stable occupancy
In August 2024, 286 accommodation establishments with a total of 64,877 beds were available to guests in Frankfurt, slightly more than in the previous year. The average bed occupancy rate was 45.8%, while room occupancy reached 64%. The average length of stay remained stable at 1.8 days.
Despite the lack of trade fair business, the figures confirm that Frankfurt is also becoming increasingly attractive for individual tourism. With a steady increase in international guests and a wide variety of source markets, the Main metropolis continues to prove itself as a popular travel destination.
