At last, the time has come: after a break of more than two years, the flea market on the banks of the Main will once again take place every 14 days from May 7 on Schaumainkai. So that the popular market in Sachsenhausen may take place again, however, a compromise solution had to be found. Because since a renewed closure of the Mainkai is planned, a retention of the old concept would have a negative effect on the traffic situation, since thus on market days both bank roads Hibbdebach and Dribbdebach - Mainkai and Schaumainkai - would be closed. Therefore, it was decided that the market area would be adapted in the future in order to maintain important traffic relations. Whereas the flea market previously took place in two sections, between Friedensbrücke in the west and Alte Brücke in the east, divided by Schweizer Straße, the reduced market area will now be limited to the area between Friedensbrücke and Untermainbrücke. Analogous to the planned restricted area on the northern bank of the Main River, the road section of Schaumainkai between Untermainbrücke and Alte Brücke will remain passable on flea market dates.
The event time on the other hand remains unchanged Saturdays from 9 to 14 o'clock in principle fortnightly rhythm, but adapted to other major events on the Mainufer, which are also to take place again from this year. The market preparations begin at 6 a.m., the market vendors then set up their booked stands and can use the usual access road on Stresemannallee. By 4 p.m., the stands will be cleared, and by 6 p.m., the area cleaning will be completed. The necessary parking area for flea market vendors is located in the western section of Schaumainkai in the direction of Friedensbrücke. Snack bars to cater to market guests will be located in the center of the market area.
Stall reservations are available now at the flea market office of HFM Managementgesellschaft für Hafen und Markt by e-mail at flohmarkt@hfm-frankfurt.de or by phone at 069/212-48562. For the flea market operation, the adapted area has about 1000 meters of stand space capacity. With up to four hundred market participants per event date in the summer months and around ten thousand stand bookings per year, the Frankfurt flea market is one of the largest in the Rhine-Main region. As before, the Frankfurt flea market is also held in weekly rotation at the Lindleystraße location.
Due to a resolution of the city council, the flea market moved temporarily to the northern bank of the Main from January 25, 2020. The relocation of the flea market location was planned until the end of the traffic trial at that time to close the Main Quay between the Old Bridge and the Lower Main Bridge. Due to legal restrictions in connection with the Covid 19 pandemic, it was no longer possible to hold large events since March 2020. Therefore, the flea market at Mainkai could only be held four times after the change of location. In the meantime, if possible, the market was held in the Osthafen with access and hygiene concept in a cordoned-off event area. Effective April 2, the authoritative Corona protection requirements in Hesse expired. This means that events such as the flea market on the banks of the Main can once again be organized without any measures restricting operations.
The flea market participants and attendees, but also many visitors, greatly missed the lively market activity on the banks of the Main during the pandemic. Thus, the HFM, which organizes the flea market, has received numerous telephone and written inquiries over the past weeks and months, asking when the Mainufermarkt will start again. So these inquiries can now finally be answered positively again!
