Frankfurt Waste Prevention Week launched

Many campaigns and hands-on activities against food waste

Being more mindful with resources, reducing food waste and consuming more consciously - these are the guiding principles behind Frankfurt's Waste Prevention Week, which kicked off on Tuesday, November 12. Until November 28, there will be numerous information and hands-on activities in the Main metropolis on waste prevention and the sustainable use of food. The campaign week is being organized by Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH (FES), which is coordinating a total of 40 different activities together with 35 partner organizations.

"Waste prevention starts with ourselves," emphasizes Tina Zapf-Rodríguez, Head of the Department for Climate, Environment and Women's Issues, during a press event in the ada_kantine. She poses critical questions: "Do things that can still be repaired have to go in the bin? Do I really need plastic bags for shopping? Or do we throw away food that is still edible just because it has a small dent?" Zapf-Rodríguez appeals to everyone's sense of responsibility and refers to the numerous tips and food for thought provided during the week. These are intended to inspire citizens to live more sustainably.

The motto of this year's European Week for Waste Reduction is "Down to the last crumb: use food carefully" - a call to use food in a way that conserves resources. In keeping with this, a wide range of activities are on the program in Frankfurt: from a community brunch with saved food to cooking events that use all ingredients "from leaf to tuber", to city nature excursions, lectures and workshops on sustainable fashion.

The "Frankfurt can go waste-free" network has been organizing the Frankfurt Action Week since 2017. What once began with eleven players and 13 campaigns has now developed into a comprehensive network that is active all year round and was given a new name in 2022. The aim is to raise awareness of the careful use of resources not only during European Waste Prevention Week, but throughout the year.

Anyone interested in the topics of food waste and waste prevention is welcome to take part in the events. An overview of the events and dates is available on the FES Frankfurt website.
